Here are the artifacts I received from my lesson on States of Matter. I'm very pleased with the results and feedback. Thank you to those of you who turned in your artifact and filled out my reflection form!
This blog is for my Technology in the Classroom class through Northern Arizona University. Reflections from this class will be posted in order to benefit my classmates and allow me to track my progress and learning throughout this course.

Micro Lesson #1
States of Matter
Kellsi's Micro Lesson #1 - States of Matter
INTRODUCTION: This a first grade lesson that addresses the three states of matter. This lesson fulfills the following 1st grade science standard:
Strand 5: Physical Science > Concept 1: Properties of Objects and Materials > PO 2: Classify materials as solids or liquids
Strand 5: Physical Science > Concept 1: Properties of Objects and Materials > PO 2: Classify materials as solids or liquids
INSTRUCTIONAL PREPARATION: Start with a reminder on what matter is and what it’s three states are. I will do so using the presentation on ABCya (website). I decided to use this because it is student friendly and defines the states of matter. Then, I will transition to a whole group categorizing activity which will be done on the carpet. All students will participate by holding up fingers for which state of matter they believe an object to be. One finger will represent solids, two for liquids and three for gases.
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT: This assessment will be completed during the whole group categorizing activity. I will be able to tell whether or not the majority of my students are grasping the concept through their participation.
ARTIFACT DEVELOPMENT: This is based on the “ideal classroom” where each student has an iPad. Students will complete and individual, categorizing activity on the website ABCya. It requires students to categorize objects into one of the three states of matter. Students will screenshot their final product to turn in for a grade.
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT: This will derive from the artifact development portion of this lesson. Students will turn in their screenshot for a grade. The grade will be based on the number of attempts it took the student to complete the activity. For example, twelve tries is 100%.
CONCLUSION: I like this activity because it is engaging and interactive for the students. It is also a great way to wrap up a unit on matter and it’s three states.
Guiding Questions for the Activity:
- What classifies that as a solid/liquid/gas?
- Does it keep it’s own shape? If we drop it/pour it out will it stay the same shape?
- What’s inside the bubble/balloon? Can you see what’s inside? Is it it’s own shape or is it taking the shape of it’s container?
- What’s coming out of the pot of boiling water?
- Class, do you agree or disagree? (full participation)
- (Name), tell me why you agree/disagree.
